When the United States went to war in Afghanistan following 9/11, she did so for the right reasons: to remove the Taliban, rout out Al Qaeda and hunt down Bin Laden.
For the most part the Taliban was removed from power relatively quickly and the Al Qaeda leadership was on the run very soon after American troops invaded the God forsaken land.
Of course, Bin Laden was not located and killed until 2011 but he had been effectively removed from any position of influence years before he was killed.
Compare Iraq: the reasons stated for going into Iraq including most importantly the presence of weapons of mass destruction were for the most part determined to be false. The so-called Bush doctrine which was a huge misstatement and an abrogation of American foreign policy since World War II led the United States into this most controversial use of American military force since Vietnam. BUT disregarding the reasons for going into Iraq initially, it appears that there is at least a chance that the peace may hold there and that a foothold for democracy, at least in some sense may take root. While the Bush reasons for going in may have been wrong and distorted, the fact is that the jury is still out on whether or not a positive result can be had in Iraq. So long as there is a possibility of a positive result in this critical region it makes sense to maintain a military presence calculated to help achieve that potential positive result.
Put another way: there is a way to win in Iraq. If the Iraqi government can become a self-sustainable entity that is in one fashion or another friendly to the west, that country because of its location alone not to mention resources and religious orientations is a country and people well worth the effort.
Compare again, Afghanistan: Right reasons, initially, notwithstanding, there simply are NO reasons for being there now. Unlike Iraq, there is simply put no way to win in Afghanistan. The Obama Administration has not articulated a reason for the sacrifice of American lives there and it cannot because there is none.
Where are the Democrats that for years spoke the words “exit strategy.”? Where are you now, when after nearly three years, this President has pursued a Bush doctrine policy in Afghanistan?
Or compare even Vietnam. No doubt the Vietnam War was mishandled at times and while much of history may suggest that America “lost” in Vietnam, the fact of the matter is that Vietnam was only one of several conflicts with the communists. While the war against communism, in general, and the Vietnam War in particular, is another debate altogether, the fact is that had America not met communism around the globe, the way for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of the Soviet empire may not have come so easily upon the angry words of a United States President. Those who fought in Vietnam did not fight in vain.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Afghanistan. It is a war without a purpose, a war without a plan and a war that cannotin any circumstance be “won.”
The cost of the war in Afghanistan has not even been mentioned. According to the congressional research service the war in Afghanistan is costing 3.6 billion dollars per month, not to mention the sacrifice of some of America’s best. Some estimates are higher.
This blog fully supports the use of American military force in appropriate situations where immediate security interests of the United States are at stake and where achievable results can be foreseen. President Obama’s use of force in Libya is one of those situations. Legal technicalities aside the use of covert aid to the freedom fighters in Syria ought to be considered.
The United States can easily maintain and protect a few air force bases in the Afghan/Pakistan area for a fraction of the monetary cost of this ridiculous episode in Afghanistan and still protect U.S. security interests in the region.
If the United Nations or Peace Corps or some other entity wants to fund a “Marshall Plan” for Afghanistan (U.S. tax dollars should not be directly used for it since it is not a worthwhile purpose) that is fine. But the U.S. military needs to be utilized and the lives of American servicemen and women need to be sacrificed for purposes useful to the United States. This ain’t one of them.
President Obama has been office now for nigh on three years. It is time for him to do something besides blame Bush.

Nice Info Integrated waste management using LCA (life cycle analysis) attempts to offer the most benign options for waste management. For mixed MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) a number of broad studies have indicated that waste administration, then source separation and collection followed by reuse and recycling of the non-organic fraction and energy and compost/fertilizer production of the organic waste fraction via anaerobic digestion to be the favoured path.
